Flood season approaches, events kick-off this weekend

With Calgary’s flood season fast approaching (May 15 to July 15), there are a number of flood-related events happening throughout the city in the coming weeks.


To keep you in-the-loop during this busy time, we’ve listed upcoming events below. 


Canada’s Emergency Preparedness Week


This year, Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is May 5-11, 2019.


Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness initiative that has taken place annually since 1996. It is a collaborative event undertaken by provincial and territorial emergency management organizations supporting activities at the local level, in concert with Public Safety Canada and partners. EP Week encourages Canadians to take steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies.


During Emergency Preparedness Week, Calgary Emergency Management Agency will be hosting a booth on Stephen Avenue with interactive activities on May 1, 2, 8 and 9 presenting emergency preparedness information to Calgarians.

Disaster Alley hosted by Calgary Emergency Management Agency


Disaster Alley, CEMA’s kick-off to EP Week, is a free event for all ages. Join to learn simple steps to prepare yourself for emergencies such as floods, power outages, and severe weather events.

Jane’s Walk: Flood Protection in Sunnyside


The Sunnyside community is hosting a “Jane’s Walk” to discuss flood protection in the community  Expected duration: 2 hours. 


Sunday, May 5, 2019
4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Meet at the Sunnyside Bus Loop (corner of 7 Ave and 5 St NW)


During this walk, hosts will discuss the impact of the 2013 flood on the Sunnyside community, starting at the site of the “Crisis Café”, which was the neighbourhood gathering place in the immediate aftermath of the 2013 flood. Walkers will see where additional flood protection is needed and local infrastructure projects in various stages of completion.

The walk will be lead by CRCAG’s Sunnyside representative, Charlie Lund (also of Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association), in tandem with Vania Chivers (City of Calgary) and Lisa Chong (HSCA).


BONUS: The City will arrange to open the doors to look into the recently completed Sanitary Lift Station (cannot enter due to safety concerns).

Water: A Sustainable Future – 2019 Distinguished Speakers Panel


Event is hosted by the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering Alumni Chapter.


Guest panelists will share their knowledge on what’s happening – locally and globally – to the water we all depend on for community sustainability and economic growth.

Annual flood resilience plan update with Council


On May 15, City administration will give their annual update on Calgary’s Flood Resiliency Plan to the Utilities and Corporate Services Committee. This is an opportunity for Council to get an update on the status of various flood mitigation projects. No decisions are made by Council at this meeting, but members of the public are welcome to attend.


Details, including the report, will be available on calgary.ca/council no later than May 12.

Hidden in plain sight – Bow River flood protection in Eau Claire


Join City Water staff on a walk from the Peace Bridge to Centre Street that will reveal flood mitigation built into the West Eau Claire Park and promenade design elements. You will also have the opportunity on this walk to learn about other work that is reducing flood risk across the city, as well as how Calgarians can prepare for flooding.


Multiple dates:

  • Wednesday, May 22, 5 – 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 30, 12 – 1 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 1, 2 – 3 p.m.


Free – Registration is required
Meeting location: South end (downtown) of the Peace Bridge.
Ending location: Centre Street (south side of the river).
Total distance: 1.2 km
The walk will be on a flat and paved pathway.
